What Happens if You Put Diesel in a Petrol Car?
If you have mistakenly put diesel in a petrol car then you will be relieved to know that usually there isn’t any serious damage caused to your engine.
However, if you try to drive your petrol car with diesel you could cause serious damage to your vehicle. This is because the diesel will be circulated around your petrol engine. Unlike diesel, which has to be compressed to ignite, petrol is ignited by a spark generated by the spark plugs and if the car is started the diesel will clog up the spark plugs and fuel system, causing the vehicle to misfire, smoke and possibly stop running.
After the contaminated fuel has been flushed from the system, the bike or car should start fairly quickly.

What To Do If You Put Diesel In A Petrol Car
- Haven’t Started The Vehicle
With any misfuelling when diesel is put in a petrol car we recommend a full fuel drain of your fuel tank. If you haven’t started your car then there shouldn’t be any damage caused to your vehicle. In addition, we recommend that if you have put any quantity of diesel in your petrol tank then you should use a specific additive to remove any diesel residue left in your fuel system.
- Started The Engine
If you have started your car we recommend a full drain of the contaminated fuel and then flush the fuel lines with clean petrol. Once this has been done, you should not suffer any further problems to your car and should be able to fill your car with petrol and drive away without any further work needed.
- Driven The Car Before Realising
If you have started your vehicle, STOP driving as soon as it is safe to do so. A full flush of the fuel lines and tank is essential to remove any contaminated fuel. Once this flush has been carried out and the vehicle has cleared the remaining residue diesel from the system, your car should run fine. We do recommend, as an extra precaution, that you change your fuel filter within a few days of the incident, these are a relatively low cost component and are simple to install.
